Been learning the wonderful art of 3d animation over the past few weeks and while I seem to be getting the hang of it now I must say it does seem to be quite a laborious, tedious, time-consuming activity. Enjoyable though ... but time consuming. So I checked out some of the motion capture solutions out there and while most of the professional-range equipment is FAAAAAAAR out of my league (and by that I mean my bank balance of course), I did stumble across a promising solution involving iPi Soft's Desktop Motion Capture and 4 Playstation Eye cameras. The cameras finally arrived, the software is set up and ready to go, no fancy mocap suit required; just an empty garage and privacy from giggling neighbours. Will post some progress shots as I get going with this, I still need 4 tripods, 4 ten-meter USB cables and a 4-port USB hub. As long as the main motions are captured, I can animate and tweak the rest of the rig manually from there which should at least save me a few hours of work. Joy!

Just saw "Castaway On The Moon" on SBS 2. If I ever become that enthusiastic about pigeon poop, I swear to god... Anyway, good film if you get the chance to watch it. It's about a dude that tries to kill himself but fails and ends up washed up on an island in a river running through the middle of the city. He decides to abandon society and live on the island alone. The only one that spots him is a hikikomori girl and a strange kind of love blossoms between the two. Naturally. Heartwarming end!

Of course I can't conclude this journal entry without including something randomly bizarre. How I stumbled across this YouTube video I have no idea, but in a nutshell: quirky animation, creepy yet strangely soothing music, and alien abduction stories. Beautiful. Truly just ... beautiful.

If the future is now, and the present can wait, then that explains why history sucks.
